Diving in the United States of America has it all. Cold freshwater dive sites at shipwrecks is available in the Great Lakes of Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan, Superior and in the Saint Lawrence River. Salt water diving can be done in California and near Seattle and Vancouver while Florida has some of the best warm water reef dive sites in the world. This diversity means that there are many different kinds of marine life available from whales up to brass and reef fish such as butterfly fish and angelfish. While a thick wetsuit or drysuit is necessary in the North, diving at the Florida Keys and at the dive sites around San Diego can be done with 2mm lycra suits. Water temperatures can reach 25 degrees Celsius here in summer and can be just above freezing in the Great Lakes and Seattle. The variety of landscape has provided us with different kinds of dives as well. Rocks, shipwrecks, caves and reefs appear in all different types and shapes. And because the diving business is well developed, it is never hard to find shops that arrange tours or rent out equipment.

Florida is probably the most famous region for diving in the USA but it is definitely not the only one. California is another number one dive destination with warm water in southern parts and we shouldn't forget the huge amount of dive sites at the five different Great Lakes. Many shipwrecks have stranded here in their quest to make as much money with cargo and passenger transport across water. Last but not least we have the dive sites around Vancouver and Seattle.

  • Florida is the best known diving paradise in the USA. There are hundreds of different dive sites. The warm weather attracts many tourists so this is the place to be if you want to do some courses. The brilliant reef next to the Florida Keys houses thousands of species of fish in all its variety of colours. There are plane wreck to dive on and many dive sites are accessible from Miami.
  • California can be spread out across several parts. To the south we have San Diego, Los Angeles and the islands in the Channel. While more to the north are dive sites around Monterey, Sonoma and the Mendocino Coast.
  • Lake Ontario is the smallest and most Western lake in Central America. With huge lakeside cities as Rochester's and Toronto, dive shops are well available. Famous spots include Kingston and the dive sites around Prince Edward County. Just North of Lake Ontario is the Saint Lawrence River which is the largest river that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Great Lakes. This passage has resulted in many wrecks along the way.
  • Lake Erie, just below Lake Ontario has a wide variety of shipwrecks available. Scuba diving is well established near Long Point and Point Pelee.
  • Lake Huron connected with the Georgian Bay and North Channel has quite a few underwater preserves where they have all kinds of regulation to preserve the lake. This results in very good and well maintained dive sites at shipwrecks. With smaller cities such as Cheboygan and Alpena this lake is much less crowded and travelled on than neighbouring lakes Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
  • Lake Michigan is probably the most crowded lake with huge cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee. Some of the best regions to dive here are around Manitou Island and Green Bay.
  • Lake Superior is the largest lake of the Great Lakes with a surface area of more than 80.000 square meters which equals for example the state of South Carolina and the country of Austria, Europe. The most remote lake as well with settlements as Marquette as starting point for diving in Alger Underwater Preserve and Sault Ste Marie for dive sites around Whitefish Point.
  • There are brilliant fresh and salt water dives to be done in Vancouver and Seattle (Puget Sound). Puget Sound is an system of many sweet water rivers which provide for excellent.

But there are many dive sites around inland Texas and its coast as well, not to mention the several springs in inland Florida and the diving opportunities around New England and Rhode Island. Wherever you are in the United States of America, there is diving and dive shops can be found in the larger cities.
